1 March 2015 - Clean Up Australia Day - Huskisson base - note from Co-ordinators Paul and Jan Sutton This we believe is the largest volunteer site for Clean Up Australia Day in Shoalhaven, and also it has been running for the last 15 years at Huskisson, and before that 6 years at Yerriyong. In 2015 we had 61 volunteers with 11 children being involved. Jan and I are thinking that next year we will try hard to market to the youth, this teaches wonderful skills for the future. Many thanks to all the volunteers for their valued assistance. We collected approx 4 cubic meters of rubbish over a 5 square kilometer radius of Moona Moona Creek. WELL DONE TO YOU ALL - Paul and Jan Sutton - 1 March 2015 |

THANKS to local volunteers, Collingwood Beach on Jervis Bay is one of the cleanest in the country. The volunteers, who are loosely organised as the Collingwood Beach Cleanup Crew, have recently been sponsored by Bendigo Bank’s Sanctuary Point branch. |
Nikki Saarinen organised the sponsorship after meeting one of the crew, John Hives, on the beach about six months ago.
“The crew are all volunteers and make nothing from it at all except pride in keeping the beach pristine. The bank was keen to help out however it could, and we hope to do more in the future.” The crew’s work resulted in Collingwood Beach being named in 2013 the cleanest in NSW under the Clean Beaches program run by the federal government’s Department of the Environment. “We also came in the top five nationally,” John Hives said. “You can’t run two years in a row, but we’ll back for the 2015 competition.” The crew cleans the beach from the rocks at the Vincentia end right up to Moona Moona Creek, with one member, Annette Cape, spending two hours a week actually cleaning up around Moona Moona Creek bridge and car park. |
“I see the bridge as the gateway to Vincentia and decided to keep it as clean as possible. When I started about three years ago it was filthy. Fishermen leave a lot of waste on and around the bridge.”
Many members of the crew do some cleaning every day when they come down to the beach for a walk or a swim. Member Gloria Holland said they find all sorts of things left in the sand. “Cameras, wallets, towels, clothing, kid’s toys. And of course horrible garbage like cigarette butts, plastic waste and worst of all – dog poop!” “It’s a dog-free beach,” said Gloria’s mother, Sally Holland. “And it’s locals who are the worst offenders. When we remind them they shouldn’t be walking their dogs on Collingwood Beach some are very nasty to us. “On the other hand, tourists are often very complimentary about our efforts.” |
Keeping Australia Beautiful -by Paul Patten, Huskisson, August 2014
You will see people of all ages around Jervis Bay with heads lowered and backs bent! They are scouring the parks and streets of Vincentia and Huskisson, not by accident! They are picking up discarded plastic bags, paper and bottles then placing them in the bin For this is an important day of March each year, when Clean up Australia all over the country begins! Whenever, you go out to your local beaches and council parks and see how wonderful the place all looks Just think of all the people who volunteer, on the first Sunday of March, Each year and the many hours of their time it took! Wherever you are, if it’s taking that special photograph from your car - overlooking the pristine waters of Jervis Bay! For all that magnificent scenery that it gives and for sweet memories to relive, we would like to keep it that way! |
So don’t be a tosser, pick up that lolly wrapper, cigarette butt or soft drink tin! Please give a little thought for the community and with your support will make you feel much better within! Don’t imagine it’s only the first Sunday of March each year, we take care to beautify our coastal surrounds, We would like to count on people like you, to join the rest of the crew, to keep tidy our cities and towns! When all’s well and done for the people who like to have some fun, keep cool and play it by ear The pride that you get from those handshakes of respect fill your heart with happiness and good cheer! So come on down and see Paul [Sutton], if you hear the call it could be a great start to a brand new week! Become a volunteer and grab your clean up gear and join our group at MOONA MOONA CREEK -Paul Patten, Huskisson, August 2014 |
20 November 2013 - KAB NSW Newsletter: http://kabnsw.org.au/huskisson-beach-receives-highly-commended-at-australian-sustainable-cities-awards/
Huskisson Beach receives Highly Commended at Australian Sustainable Cities Awards On Monday, 19 November, Huskisson Beach received a Highly Commended in the Community Partnerships Award at the Keep Australia Beautiful, 2013 Australian Clean Beaches Awards. The event was held in the Cockburn, Western Australia. |
Huskisson Beach had the most significant project demonstrating community action and partnership; the Woolly Way cycle path. The cycle path is a shared project that links Huskisson to other communities along the foreshore, in particular Woollamia.
David Imrie, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, said it was pleasing to see communities from New South Wales acknowledged on the national stage. “I’d like to congratulate the Huskisson Beach community on receiving this well deserved commendation,” Mr. Imrie said. “Huskisson takes great pride in their beach and their ongoing partnerships with local community groups and Shoalhaven City Council helps maintain their pristine environment for tourists and locals to enjoy.” Averil Bones, National Clean Beaches Judge, praised the community spirit of Huskisson and the calibre of other state winners which made for a competitive awards program. “Visiting the five national finalists and learning about all their fantastic work was a real privilege. In all of the five finalists, it was obvious that a special spirit emerges where each community has a strong and enduring connection to its local environment.” “I know that the beaches at Currumbin, Huskisson, Stanley, Holdfast Bay and Frankston will continue to be beautiful, vibrant and inspiring places to live and visit.” The Overall Australian Clean Beaches award went to Currumbin, Queensland. |

12 September 2013 We welcomed National Clean Beaches Awards Judge Averil Bones to Huskisson Beach and Collingwood Beach on 12 September 2013. Big thanks to everybody who turned out to help on the day, and to all those who worked behind the scenes (community and Shoalhaven City Council) to make the beach picture perfect on the day. Judge Averil seemed suitably impressed, and accompanied us on a bicycle ride along the shared pathway. - Paul Sutton Team Leader |

Paul Sutton on YouTube - published on 24 February 2013 - Testimonial from the NSW Clean Beaches winner
Huskisson Beach is on Jervis Bay on the south coast of NSW. The traditional owners of the land are the Jerringa people, represented by the present day Jerringa LALC. There is a gazetted Aboriginal settlement at Wreck Bay at the southern arm of Jervis Bay. In 1995, Jervis Bay National Park and Jervis Bay Botanic Gardens Annexe were granted to Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community Council and leased back to the Director of National Parks. In 1911, the Navy selected a site to build the Naval College, and in 1915 the Commonwealth acquired the land and sea that form the Jervis Bay Territory. In 1969, Murrays Beach was proposed as the site of a nuclear power station. Early industries were shipbuilding, timber and fishing, but now evolving into tourism, and especially active and activity based visitation. Jervis Bay is now a declared Marine Park, in acknowledgement of its special environmental values....continued under |
Paul Sutton (contd)....We were grateful for the chance to acknowledge the many ongoing contributors to the health and amenity of our renowned beaches.
But just as importantly, participating in the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW - Clean Beaches Program provided a platform for us to look to the future.
Many existing and expected, and at times conflicting demands exist in Jervis Bay, from naval operations, to urban development, to aquaculture proposals, to protection of the resident dolphin and migratory whale pods, to triathlons and yachting marinas. We hope the recognition of Huskisson Beach in 2012 and 2013 will galvanize both local government and the resident and visitor community alike, to keep the ongoing safety and health of our beaches and the bay environment in our minds.
Huskisson was the first mainland "Plastic Bag Free" town, and we've been running Clean Up Australia in Huskisson for 12 years.
We have volunteers who collect litter on the beach every day, and at our request Shoalhaven City Council has started extra cleanups during peak holiday times.
So this is a community-wide project, and it sets a good tone, to which tourism visitors readily respond.
We thank Joanna Gash, Mayor of Shoalhaven City, for her congratulatory message, shown opposite.

7 December 2012 - Hooray for Husky: Life’s a peach on the state’s best beach South Coast Register: http://www.southcoastregister.com.au/story/1171448/hooray-for-husky-lifes-a-peach-on-the-states-best-beach/?cs=203
We all knew it was true, but now it’s official. Huskisson Beach is the best beach in NSW. The beach was named as the overall state winner at yesterday’s Sydney Water Clean Beaches Connecting our Coast awards.
Husky Beach also received a Highly Commended in the Litter and Waste Management category.
Chairperson of the Huskisson and Woollamia Community Voice Garry Kelson said it was a proud day for the community. He said it was important to acknowledge the local litter busters like Paul Sutton and John Hives who work hard to make sure beaches like Huskisson Beach were not trashed. “The award is an acknowledgement of our unsung heroes,” he said. “They take a lot of care cleaning our beaches on a day to day basis.”
The Huskisson and Woollamia Community Voice and other community members started their submission in August 2012. Mr Kelson said in the end Huskisson Beach won because of its sheer beauty and he wants others to now help keep the beach clean. “Instead of walking past a piece of rubbish we would like to see people picking the litter up and putting it in the bin,” he said. “Putting rubbish in the bin could become infectious if people see others doing it.”
NSW Environment Minister Robyn Parker said the local award was well deserved. “Local community groups and Shoalhaven City Council demonstrated outstanding community participation and pride in maintaining the pristine environment of Huskisson Beach for tourists and locals to enjoy,” she said.
Mr Kelson said the next step was to make sure some commercial value came from the award. He said he would work with the local tourism association to make sure the Jervis Bay economy got some commercial benefits from the accolade.
