Beach Dunes - Huskisson Beach - from 2012 - Dunes in front of Huskisson Beach Tourist Resort
Some time ago a small subcommittee of the Huskisson Woollamia Community Voice was formed to enable Council and the community to work together on planning for the future of Public Reserves in the vicinity of the Huskisson Tourist Resort (Huskisson Beach). At the time, we had asked if it was possible to work on the dunes as they contained weeds and dying older plants native to the dune system.
Shoalhaven City Council has now found funding for planning for this and the subcommittee has recently met with Gerard Proust of Proust Bushland Services, who has the contract to produce the plan. While a number of points were agreed upon, Mr Proust is not required to give his plan to Council until mid May 2013, so any further ideas can be put to the subcommittee to forward to Mr Proust.

8 January 2015 - Dear HWCV, here is the draft of the Huskisson Beach Management Action Plan (MAP) -1.8MB to go onto the HWCV website for comments. It arrives with our deepest apologies for the time it’s taken. One thing after another kept cropping up - the latest of which was the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage issue, which I’m sure I don’t need to explain. This is the first of what may be many beach action plans, so we were keen to keep it simple and create a template of sorts that will be useful in the future. The main disclaimer is that everything is budget dependent. And to assist with that situation, the plan can be used as sound justification for budget bids and funding applications.
The next meeting of the northern Natural Resources Committee is on April 29, 2015, so could we have comments back to Council by Friday March 13, 2015. Individual comments can be sent directly to Council email: council@shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au Alternatively, if the HWCV wish to receive and collate comments, that would be good too. Whatever suits. Warm regards, Penelope Lumb, Coast & Estuaries Assistant, Shoalhaven City Council Tel: 02 4429 3623 Email: lumbp@shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au Web: www.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au
Aim of the Plan -1.8MB: The aim of the Huskisson Beach MAP is to consolidate existing documents into one simple plan which will serve as the guide to management actions at Huskisson Beach and foreshore reserves for three to five years, viz:

1 September 2014 - new Council newsletter - Frontline News -215kb (coastal management)
From: Rippon, Jessica Sent: Monday, September 01, 2014 2:36 PM To: All CCBs Subject: Frontline News - Coastal Management
Earlier in the year the Natural Resources and Floodplain Management committees were sent a draft copy of the first issue of the Frontline News - a newsletter about coastal management. Thank you to those who provided comments – all of which were positive and contributed to an improved final version.
Attached is the final version of the newsletter which will be printed and enclosed with the next distribution of rates notices in October.
Coastal management is of interest to a broad spectrum of the Shoalhaven community and distribution with the rates is not only cost effective, it provides the opportunity for ratepayers, where ever they live, to register their interest and be placed on the email list to receive future editions.
As the rates mail out is some time away, we are providing the NRFM committees and CCBs with an ‘early release’ of the newsletter which will also be posted on Council’s website. Please feel free to forward this email on through your networks.

January 2014 - Draft Huskisson Beach Dunes - Bushcare Plan - 615kb - for comment January 2014
Points to be included in the 2013 Dunes plan are:
- Weeds will be removed - Australian plants such as Coastal Rosemary (Westringia fruticosa) that are not native to that system will be left and allowed to die out naturally as too much removal of vegetation could leave spaces for other weeds to come in. - Cleared out areas will be mulched and planted up with species that belong on those dunes. - Groups of taller species will be dotted in a few places. - A maintenance program will be formulated as part of this project and one point in that will be no mowing, so the strip of grass just to the east of some parts of the walkway will be planted up with species compatible to the dune vegetation. - Consideration will be given to what will be under the seats that are facing the beach and in a grassed area at the moment. - The maintenance program needs to be such that interested members of the community could do this work once the area is complete and we can find sufficient enthusiastic folk to assist. Although this plan will cover only a portion of the dunes at Huskisson Beach, it is good to start somewhere. Please send further thoughts and ideas to subcommittee members: Nina (ninacomo@iinet.net.au) or Leslie (lesleith@ozemail.com.au). Deadline is 26th April 2013. |
Myrtle Rust - info supplied by Leslie Lockwood, Sept 2013.
Myrtle Rust is a fungal disease that has the propensity to adversely affect nurseries, national parks and spread to other areas if not taken seriously. It can affect bottlebrushes (Callistemon), Melaleuca, Lilly Pillys, Eucalypts and other plants in the same family. More information about the disease and how it should be treated from NSW Dept of Primary Industries link: http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/biosecurity/plant/myrtle-rust/resources Link to publication: Myrtle-Rust-inmy-backyard (140kb) by the NSW Dept of Primary Industries |

Subject: Huskisson Woollamia Community Voice, September Meeting Date: 6 September 2013 To: 'Nina Douglas' (HWCV) Thanks Nina - a couple of things...... 1. I will try to arrange a meeting onsite at the Northern end of the Huskisson Beach reserve to finalise the position for the small toilet block that I intend to provide. I understand that there are arrangements for power to be provided in that area for the world hobie-cat championships next year so I will need to make a provision for power to my site as part of this. I already have sewer and water nearby. Proposed placement as attached, but I want Council's parks and assets people to be involved as well as yourselves, so every7one is aware of what we are planning. I'll arrange this asap. 2. The landscaping for the fenceline of the annex area has started. I have also had my surveyor re-peg the proposed roadway so that the sites proposed comply with the requirements of the relevant legislation. I have also asked my arborist for a report on the trees that may be affected and some suggestions for a tree/vegetation management plan so we can detail what we are likely to lose in the future and what we should be planting now for the future. 3. Council has done some drainage works behind Huskisson Beach Tourist Resort and created an earth mound along the fenceline - I'm going to approach Council to see if we can plant this out with something appropriate. 4. I have a new management team in at the Huskisson White Sands property, Paul & Jenni. We have also cleaned up the top corner of this property where we used to have lots of drainage issues. We have re-done the drainage and put in synthetic grass sites. Regards, Kevin Sullivan |

Huskisson Beach Clearing Work Angers Residents Radio 2ST: (link has expired) http://www.2st.com.au/index.php/news/49911-huskisson-beach-clearing-work-angers-residents Jervis Bay residents are seeking urgent answers from Shoalhaven Council about clearing work being carried out on the Huskisson Beach Foreshore. |
Yesterday, contractors removed the fence along the edge of the dune area and began slashing vegetation to put in a 3 metre wide sand roadway along the reserve.
Local resident, Garry Kelson says this is not part of the Huskisson Beach Foreshore Reserve Management plan and they want to know who authorised the work. Mr Kelson says the judges for the National Clean Beach awards are due to arrive in two weeks time and this is not a good look for the beach. |
